Riccardo Muti’s interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s symphonies caused a sensation in the music world in the late 1970s. In contrast to versions that often suffered from opulence or excessive pathos, he broke with interpretive traditions and delivered a no-frills performance, faithful to the original score, with relentless rhythmic tension and great clarity in the instrumental textures. This streamlined approach revitalized our perception of this repertoire, particularly the early symphonies, which had previously been neglected.
