Utah baroque-pop quartet The MelIons invoke the late-60’s golden age with a floral concoction of full-bodied melodies, tender harmonies, and maximalist production.
Based out of Salt Lake City, the group channel the sunshine-drenched good vibrations of Brian Wilson, the British Invasion, & the orchestral stylings of harmony groups like The Left Banke, The Association, and The Millenium. On 2022’s amazing debut album Introducing…, Utah neo-baroque band The Mellons used just about everything in their surroundings that makes a sound, and for their sophomore full-lengther In Color they have expanded their arsenal even further. Not as an end in itself, but simply to mine the late-1960s habitable zone as best as possible, serving up sunshine psych and baroque pop with an infectious sense of joy.
The fifteen new tracks are packed with orchestral flourishes, playful hooks, and kaleidoscopic arrangements that must have been lovingly handcrafted. From the first notes of the short opening tune You’re Invited!, you feel that these guys are determined to embrace you with warmth. Even the commercial-style breaks add to its charm, creating a whimsical, immersive listen. Above all, the flawless harmonies and richly layered instrumentation make this a vibrant, contemporary celebration of pop’s most colorful era.
