Xangorchestra was founded in Bologna in 2022 as a collective laboratory for musical experimentation among a group of friends, in response to an institutional music environment perceived as arid and inhospitable. The project developed through regular sessions focused on contemporary improvisation and composition practices, including conduction, Cobra, radical improvisation, graphic scores and guided improvisation, with the aim of exploring the meeting point between written material and spontaneous creation. After an initial period of research, the ensemble shaped part of this work into a repertoire that was performed live in Bologna and recorded in May at Duna Studio.
The music draws on both jazz and classical traditions, filtered through irony and a deliberately grotesque perspective. The project is inspired by figures and ensembles such as Misha Mengelberg and the ICP Orchestra, the Italian Instabile Orchestra, selected works by Henry Threadgill, Charles Mingus and Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra, as well as local experiences including Collettivo Bassesfere and Orchestra Creativa dell’Emilia-Romagna.
Quando le tigri fumavano documents the first recorded chapter of Xangorchestra’s collective research.
