New York-based multi-instrumentalist and string virtuoso Michael Daves has unveiled his latest project, the Fables EP, released via his own independent imprint Wild Geranium Records. The record serves as a radical conceptual reimagining of R.E.M.’s iconic yet frequently overlooked 1985 masterpiece Fables of the Reconstruction, celebrating its 40th anniversary. For Daves, whose early musical sensibilities were deeply shaped by his fellow Georgia natives, the project was approached not out of mere nostalgia, but through meticulous academic and artistic deconstruction. To execute this 6-track distillation, he enlisted his virtuoso New York acoustic quartet—featuring fiddler Alex Hargreaves and mandolinist Jacob Jolliff—celebrated for their chameleon-like ability to translate cross-genre material into string arrangements.

The sonic tapestry of R.E.M.'s original work, defined by an abstract "dream logic" and non-linear lyricism reminiscent of William Faulkner's Southern Gothic prose, was condensed by the ensemble into an urgent, acoustic framework. Bridging the gap between traditional bluegrass and alternative rock, the musicians unlocked a striking synergy; tracks like "Feeling Gravity's Pull" incorporated cello lines and dense vocal harmonies, yielding a heavy, almost metal-driven intensity despite being performed entirely on acoustic instruments. Daves intentionally preserved the narrative arc of the original LP by keeping the opening and closing pieces in their native sequence. The physical distribution strategy is equally noteworthy: alongside digital platforms, Fables was issued on cassette formats featuring exclusive live and duo bonus tracks, highlighting the artist's dedication to tangible audio media in a streaming-dominated landscape. Ultimately, Daves views this EP as the spiritual evolution of his previous effort, Orchids and Violence, effectively merging the rigid structures of traditional folk with underground rock energy.
