Its title references a 1993 semiotics report from Sandia National Laboratories that explored how to warn future civilizations about nuclear waste dangers using symbols and imagery.
True East, a trio of New York musicians, creates its own unique sonic "place" by blending diverse styles—from Cuban son montuno to flamenco, West African influences, and Western themes. Each track functions as a cinematic or geographical entity, evoking either real locations or imagined worlds. "Follow the Snake" explores Cuban rhythm in its various transformations; "Ex-Yakuza" recreates the atmosphere of Japanese cinema by Akira Kurosawa; "Horse Thief" draws inspiration from the compositional mastery of Ennio Morricone and Western imagery.
Political and social commentary occupies a central place on the album. "You'll Have to Go Through All Of Us," inspired by West African music, celebrates joy and multiplicity as a defense against tyranny.
