The Sky Is a Suitcase - El Jardín (2026) [Hi-Res]

El Jardín is built around myths of life, death, and rebirth, unfolding through sweeping melodic lines, hypnotic, mirage-like grooves, and collective improvisational meditations. Each piece draws on a distinct mythological or cultural narrative. "Inanna and Erishkigal" is rooted in the Sumerian myth of the goddess Inanna's descent into the underworld and her eventual return. "Sirius and Procyon" takes its name from the two "dog stars" of the constellation Cancer. The title track, "El Jardín," evokes the prehistoric paradise found across many world mythologies. "Otro Camino" is conceived as a proto-Cumbia procession representing the death of the ego, drawing on Andean Huaynos and Icaros — songs said to be transmitted by plant spirits to Ayahuasqueros. The record closes with "Pessoa," a tribute to the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, who built his own mythology by publishing under nearly 75 invented identities, or heterónimos.

The album's sonic palette is notably expanded compared to earlier work, incorporating Bass Clarinet, Soprano Saxophone, Flugelhorn, and the Colombian Guacho maraca traditionally used in Cumbia.

Mike wrote the bulk of the material — 11 of the 14 tracks. Influenced by W.A. Mathieu's book "Harmonic Experience," he moved away from his usual compositional method toward a slower, more deliberate approach centered on harmony, shaping Equal Temperament around the natural logic of Just Intonation. The rest of the group also contributed compositions. Ray's "Big Dreams" is a sunny, playful piece that blends medium-swing lightness with the ecstatic energy of Bel canto. Levi's "Myrth" and Carmen's "Marvelling" both first appeared on the group's debut album, released ten years earlier; performed live now, they reveal how much the group has matured and underscore how an improvisational piece can take on nearly infinite forms.
