The Rosary and the House of Jade (1997) is one of the most enigmatic and cinematic solo albums by Jeff Kelly, frontman of the Seattle neo-psychedelic band The Green Pajamas.
The album was originally released in a tiny, private run of just 50 cassettes, which Kelly gave to close friends as a Christmas gift. The recording only became widely available in 1999, when it was included on the 4-disc box set Melancholy Sun.
Unlike Kelly's previous home-acoustic, lo-fi recordings, The Rosary and the House of Jade is a conceptual album in the spirit of spy noir. The storyline revolves around a secret romantic affair with a British spy, and the geographic locations on the tracklist create an atmosphere of the Cold War, espionage, and Eastern exotica.
