Saxophonist and composer Michaela Turcerová writes music that unfolds at an extremely slow pace, drawing attention to the subtlest shifts in texture and pitch within each individual note. Her album "Šumum" comprises four pieces that grow out of themes of loss and togetherness into a dense, introspective sonic tapestry. The scores are left open enough that performers shape the music together — through listening and mutual interpretation — and even though the pieces are built from long, stretched-out tones, they are never static: no note holds still, no melody is without development.

At the core of "Šumum" is Turcerová's long-standing interest in place and minimalism — how a room's acoustics shape the perception of music and how repetition transforms a melody. As in the work of Éliane Radigue, the album reveals a full spectrum of tonal colors that emerge through close listening to wave-like, looped melodic and rhythmic patterns.

The sonic evolution across the album springs from live interaction between the musicians, who trade phrases and swap roles as the moment demands. In "Straty," sharply accented drones appear and vanish in quick succession over a continuous rhythm that colors each sustained note, shifting between melancholy and radiance. In "Vlny," pitch gradually dissolves, leaving only a delicate rhythm, while in "Masy," interlocking brass tones eventually burst outward. Each of these pieces demands focused listening — and rewards it by revealing the beauty of continual transformation.
