Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen - Midnight In Moscow (2017)

Trumpeter Kenny Ball became one of the leading figures of British trad jazz in the early 1960s, forming, alongside trombonist Chris Barber and clarinetist Mr. Acker Bilk, the unofficial trio of genre leaders known as the "3B." His worldwide fame rests on "Midnight in Moscow," a Dixieland-style rendition of a Russian song that became a massive 1962 hit and climbed charts well beyond Britain. Riding that success, a US album was released under the song's banner, making "Midnight in Moscow" its centerpiece. Decades later, this American release has finally been reissued, and the producers made a point of appealing directly to Japanese listeners: the reissue adds, as a bonus track, a version of "Sukiyaki" — the famous "Ue o Muite Arukō" ("I Look Up as I Walk"), one of the most internationally recognized Japanese hits of the 20th century. With this addition, the reissue becomes something of a definitive edition of the album — a tribute both to Ball's success in the West and his connection with Japanese audiences.
