Composer Ennio Morricone, who died in July 2020, is best known for his westerns with Sergio Leone — complete with coyote cries and clanging metal. But beyond that iconic sound lies an entirely different side of his work: music written for French and Italian cinema of the 1960s and '70s, much of it obscure and some never released at all. The compilation Morricone Secret uncovers this facet of his legacy, revealing that even when working on modest productions — sometimes bordering on B movies — the composer brought the same inventiveness and boldness found in his most celebrated scores. These recordings carry Morricone's signature touches: strange sound effects, psychedelic electric guitars, staccato strings, and organ. One standout example is Fuggire Lontano, written for the telefilm L'Automobile. Occasionally, echoes of more famous films surface — the theme for Henri Verneuil's The Sicilian Clan, for instance, appears here as an energetic, previously unpublished variation on a secondary motif. The album moves freely between daring experimental pieces like Eat it and San Babila Ore 22 and more conventional compositions, including L'immoralità and the little-known yet remarkable Macchie solari. The result is a rich portrait of Morricone's distinctive style in the first half of his career, drawn from some of his most inspired work.
