Australian composer and sound artist Lawrence English presents the album The Rest Is My Ghost, a meditation on how nostalgia in the present day has shifted from a way of engaging with the past into a tool for erasing it. English introduces his own term, "Acid Nostalgia," describing a politically and technologically charged form of nostalgia stripped of any personal, subjective connection to memory. Like acid poured over a surface, this form of nostalgia smooths away the complexity and texture of the past, reducing it to flat, hollow images — "photocopies without an original." For English, this is not merely lazy cultural habit but a mechanism that strips the future of its horizon of possibility: by erasing the layered texture of history, Acid Nostalgia simultaneously blocks the capacity to imagine alternative paths forward.Title: The Rest Is My Ghost

The record grows out of English's own personal experience and draws on a disparate collage of places, encounters, and architectural references — Japan's Metabolist movement, Hong Kong's characteristic "one line sky," and the vanished sodium-vapour streetlights of Los Angeles. Woven through the work are the ideas of thinkers and writers including Franco Berardi, Kate Crawford, J. G. Ballard, Katsuhiro Otomo, Mark Fisher, and Alexei Yurchak, each of whom sought in their own way to rupture the familiarity of the present moment. The project's earliest spark came from a conversation with documentarian Adam Curtis about the profound uncertainty of predicting the near future. Ultimately, The Rest Is My Ghost speaks not of despair but of the fragility of failure as a source of potential: for English, it is out of the ruins of former imaginings that the freedom to conceive new, still unrealized futures is born.
