Louis Prima - Breaking It Up! (1953)

In late 1951, following the massive success of the single "Oh Babe!", musician Louis Prima signed with major label Columbia Records. Assigning production duties to A&R chief Mitch Miller caused an artistic clash. Audiences admired Louis Prima for his raw, unpolished energy blending jump blues and Italian shuffle recorded on shoestring budgets. Mitch Miller, however, imposed his signature squeaky-clean production style and polished pop arrangements, guiding the artist toward commercial R&B covers, novelty tracks, and Latin-flavored tunes. Despite guest appearances by vocalist Keely Smith, the overly orchestrated commercial format constrained the performer's usual wild dynamic. The complete collection of these Columbia Records singles remains a flawed yet fascinating historical side-note in the musician's catalog.
