Hindemith’s work is, to a certain extent, part of his chamber music series, although it is the only one composed for wind quintet. Ligeti’s Six Bagatelles are probably his most popular work and a staple of most wind quintets.
Composed in the early 1950s, it is an arrangement of excerpts from his piano work *Musica Ricercata* and is representative of his early creative phase, before he emigrated to the West and found his most authentic voice. Nielsen’s Wind Quintet is a product of his maturity, unlike those of Hindemith or Ligeti.
It is certainly one of his greatest works, along with the wind concertos and the symphonies. In fact, Nielsen was so enthusiastic about the performance by the Copenhagen Wind Quintet, for which it was written, that he decided to compose a concerto for each of the quintet’s instruments. Unfortunately, he completed only the flute and clarinet concertos before his death in 1931.
