NYC 1993 Tale of the Fingers captures bassist John Goldsby's debut performance as a leader, originally recorded in July 1993 at Classic Sound studio in Brooklyn. The album features a quartet including pianist Bill Mays, drummer Terry Clarke, and alto saxophonist Andy Fusco. This reissue highlights the period when Goldsby was an active musician in New York before his move to Germany. The program includes compositions by iconic bassists such as Charles Mingus, Oscar Pettiford, and Paul Chambers. In addition to two original tracks by Goldsby, the collection features a significant thirteen-minute performance of Bill Mays' piece "Three Short Stories for Contrabass and Piano."
