The release combines two iconic scores for French New Wave films from the late 1950s and early 1960s. Georges Delerue composed the music for François Truffaut's 1962 film "Jules and Jim," while Miles Davis created the soundtrack for Louis Malle's 1958 debut film "Elevator to the Gallows." These works represent landmark achievements in the history of film music. Delerue used counterpoint for "Jules and Jim," creating distinct themes that reflect the emotional transitions between joy and anxiety in the characters. The song "Le Tourbillon," performed by Jeanne Moreau, became a standout moment of the film. Miles Davis recorded the soundtrack for "Elevator to the Gallows" in a single night in December 1957. Together with a French quintet, he improvised the music while watching clips of the film, creating an early example of a fully improvised musical score and foreshadowing his subsequent contributions to modal jazz.
