The highly original free jazz / avant garde trio Sulida, featuring three of Norway's most visionary musicians in Marthe Lea, Dag Erik Knedal Andersen and Jon Rune Strøm, played an amazing show together with the legendary trumpeter Axel Dörner at Kongsberg Jazz Festival in 2025.
Sulida is one of the most uncompromising trios on the Norwegian improvisation scene, comprising three distinctive voices in contemporary jazz: Marthe Lea, Jon Rune Strøm and Dag Erik Knedal Andersen. Together, they create a soundscape that is as unpredictable as it is poetic – raw, exploratory and deeply rooted in free improvisation.
The trio explores the boundaries between the impulsive and the structural, where every note arises in the moment and is shaped by their collective presence. With multi-instrumentalist Lea’s playful and expressive presence, Strøm’s down-to-earth and energetic bass playing, and Knedal Andersen’s intuitive drumming, the trio creates music that both challenges and invites. Their debut album *UTOS* (2024) received rave reviews, and since then the band has built a reputation as a electrifying live act.
At the Kongsberg Jazz Festival in 2025, they were joined by the German trumpet legend Axel Dörner – briefly described as “one of the most interesting improvisers in the world, an instrumentalist of prodigious technique, deep sensitivity, and a creativity that continues to grow with each release” – for what became a unique experience, and a recording. This has now been edited into a truly special listening experience in album format!
Axel Dörner, trumpet, piano
Marthe Lea, tenor saxophone, flute, vocals, piano, percussion
Jon Rune Strøm, double bass
Dag Erik Knedal Andersen, drums, percussion
