The New York experimental trio Enneads, featuring pianist Phyllis Chen (Phyllis Chen), drummer Hamir Atwal (Hamir Atwal), and multi-instrumentalist Zach Layton (Zach Layton), has released its self-titled debut album, recorded between 2024 and 2026 in the Hudson Valley. The conceptual foundation of the ensemble draws on Neoplatonic philosophy and the Pythagorean principle of harmony as "number made audible," positioning string overtones, natural harmonics, and room acoustics at the center of their spontaneous improvisations.

The album's sonic landscape is built around unconventional instrumental techniques: Zach Layton (Zach Layton) plays a 17-string electric bass routed through fuzz and ring modulation, evoking an amplified baroque theorbo or Greek lyre; Phyllis Chen (Phyllis Chen) extracts avant-garde sound clusters from inside an amplified grand piano passed through a Rat distortion pedal; and Hamir Atwal (Hamir Atwal) anchors the temporal framework with hypnotic, fluid drum cycles. Drawing inspiration from figures such as The Necks, Sunn O))), John Cage (John Cage), Gérard Grisey (Gérard Grisey), Cecil Taylor (Cecil Taylor), and Pauline Oliveros (Pauline Oliveros), the ensemble bridges the gap between contemporary jazz, spectralism, and the heavy gravitational weight of doom metal.
