The Latin music supergroup Fania All Stars, which brought together the leading soloists, vocalists, and arrangers of Fania Records, played a pivotal role in establishing salsa as an international cultural phenomenon. Evolving from intimate club dates at New York's Red Garter to massive stadium shows at Yankee Stadium and a historic performance in Zaire ahead of the "Rumble in the Jungle" fight, the orchestra led by label co-founder Jerry Masucci built a global audience. As part of an extensive international tour in 1976, the band made its debut concert appearances in Japan.

Released in 1986, the archival LP Live In Japan 1976 captures those landmark concerts. The lineup features iconic figures of Afro-Cuban music and Latin jazz: flute player and musical director Johnny Pacheco, pianist Larry Harlow, master percussionist Mongo Santamaría, bongo player Roberto Roena, cuatro virtuoso Yomo Toro, bassist Bobby Valentín, trumpeters Luis "Perico" Ortiz and Héctor "Bomberito" Zarzuela, trombonists Reinaldo Jorge and Lewis Kahn, violinist Pupi Legarreta, alongside vocalists Ismael Quintana, Ismael Miranda, Cheo Feliciano, and Santo Colón. The setlist blends cornerstone stage numbers like Descarga Fania, Quítate Tú, Ponte Duro, and El Ratón with live renditions of Lamento De Un Guajiro, Mambo Mongo, and Picadillo, showcasing intricate descarga, mambo, and Latin soul jams.
