Buveur impénitent, amateur de saucisses et de bière, Monsieur Brouček est un brave bourgeois pragois un peu ridicule, parfois vulgaire et sympathique. Il a longuement occupé Leoš Janáček pour son opéra Les Excursions de Monsieur Brouček dont la gestation fut longue et chaotique. Complexe à monter et d’une longueur peu commune cette vaste charge satirique n’a jamais trouvé son public hors de son pays d’origine. Simon Rattle a dirigé cet opéra à Brno et à Berlin en 2025 dans une mise en scène de Robert Carsen qui a replacé l’action dans les années 1968-69 qui furent politiquement difficiles pour l’ex Tchécoslovaquie comme pour le monde occidental en général. L’écriture orchestrale haute en couleurs de Janáček et le livret touffu à la fois désopilant et touchant ont séduit Sir Simon qui est revenu à Londres pour donner une version de concert de cet opéra rare à la tête du London Symphony Orchestra dont il fut autrefois le chef titulaire. La réussite de cette soirée du 4 mai 2025 reste gravée dans la mémoire des mélomanes comme des critiques qui n’hésitèrent pas à parler de chef-d’œuvre pour cet ouvrage largement méconnu. Dirigé avec passion par un Rattle particulièrement électrique, cette version de concert bénéficie d’une distribution exemplaire avec l’extraordinaire ténor Peter Hoare dans le rôle titre, impeccable dans son abattage comique et sa maîtrise d’un personnage hors du commun. La soprano Lucy Crowe, le ténor tchèque Aleš Briscein et le baryton Gyula Orendt sont tous excellents en interprétant chacun plusieurs rôles. Ce nouvel enregistrement réjouissant vient en quelque sorte réhabiliter un opéra souvent mal considéré à côté des chefs-d’œuvre de Janáček qui fleurissent avec bonheur sur la scène des opéras du monde entier.
