New York Mary was an instrumental jazz fusion group formed by former members of the Maynard Ferguson band, including Bruce Johnstone (baritone saxophone), Rick Petrone (bass), and Joe Corsello (drums). Produced by the legendary Michael Cuscuna (famous for his work with Blue Note Records), the album is highly regarded by collectors as a premier piece of "scorched-earth" jazz-funk. It features intense, uptempo rhythms, complex brass arrangements, and catchy hooks comparable to the work of The Headhunters or the Brecker Brothers.
