“Late Night Jazz - Essential Jazz For A Midnight Mood” is a two‑disc compilation released in 2014 by the My Kind Of Music label (catalog number USMMKDCD09) as part of the Essential series.
The main concept of this collection is to recreate the intimate, relaxed atmosphere of a nighttime jazz club (“smoky clubs and a laid‑back midnight mood”). The selection includes both instrumental ballads and the greatest vocal standards from the heyday of the genre.
The collection is unique in that it managed to bring together genuine titans of the jazz scene on two discs.
• Legendary instrumentalists: the compilation is opened by Oscar Peterson with his famous version of “Night Train”. The discs feature such virtuosos as John Coltrane (“Like Someone In Love”), Charlie Parker accompanied by strings, Miles Davis (represented by the epoch‑making 11‑minute composition “All Blues” on the first disc and a collaboration with Gil Evans on the second), Django Reinhardt, Bill Evans, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, and Sonny Rollins.
• Iconic vocalists: The nighttime mood is accentuated by the voices of great jazz divas and performers — Ella Fitzgerald (“Night And Day”, “Black Coffee”), Billie Holiday (“I Can't Give You Anything But Love”, “All Of Me”), Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughan, and Lena Horne.
