Jimmy McGriff - Jimmy McGriff At the Apollo + Live Where the Actions At! (2021)

American organist Jimmy McGriff entered the history of soul-jazz and hard bop as one of the most technically accomplished and expressive performers defining the sound of the Hammond B-3 organ in the second half of the 20th century. His musical approach combined virtuosic rhythmic dynamics, a rich tonal palette, and a natural vocal quality in his soloing, deeply rooted in blues and gospel traditions. In 1963, the musician captured the high-voltage energy of his live shows at Harlem's Apollo Theater on the album Jimmy McGriff at the Apollo, following it up in 1966 with another notable live document, Where the Action's At!. Bringing these two landmark recordings together on a single disc highlights the exceptional ensemble interaction of his group and solidifies his legacy as a master of the organ trio format.
