An enigmatic and illusory quality to their playing commands vigilant listening. Nilssen-Love's solo opening has punch-drunk sizzle cymbals ramming into brightly tuned tom-toms. Butcher somehow manages to find a slap-tongue sound that complements the drum tone. For a moment you're not quite certain who's playing what, until Butcher’s hollers emerge from behind their cloak of anonymity.
Not so much sheets of sound, but entire kingsize mattresses rain down over Nilssen-Love's kit in long stretches driven by Butcher’s ‘in the moment’ creative passion rather than mere patterning.
Structural tension is provoked as Butcher slows his lines down to a snail’s pace to let listeners inside — curiously apocalyptic music and an essential listen."
