Winter Family - Chevaliers (2021) [Hi-Res]

The musical duo Winter Family, comprising Ruth Rosenthal and Xavier Klaine, creates dense and somber soundscapes within the realms of funeral pop, death swing, and weird wave. Originally recorded in 2006 inside St. Martin Church in Maxeville, France, as a soundtrack for choreographer Paco Decina's dance piece, the work drew inspiration from the expressive pipe organ performances of Albert Schweitzer. Access to the church was granted by Klaine's aunt Loulou, at whose funeral a decade later he played the very same instrument. In 2018 and 2020, while clearing out his late aunt’s cold house surrounded by crucifixes and missals, Klaine remixed the pipe organ passages alongside Ruth Rosenthal's vocals, transforming the record into an elegiac reflection on memory, grief, and the vanishing world of traditional Catholic France against the backdrop of a distant highway.
