Brazilian musician and composer Leonardo Campelo Gonçalves, performing as Negro Leo, transitioned from a background in anthropology and sociology to become a defining and politically uncompromising figure in contemporary Brazilian experimental music. Beginning his musical path at age 28, he developed a radical sound environment that became the focus of a documentary film by Paula Gaitán and a dedicated scholarly book by Bernardo Oliveira. Collaborating closely with his wife Ava Rocha, producers Sergio Machado and Renato Godoy, alongside core musicians Kiko Dinucci, Juçara Marçal, and Domenico Lancellotti, he built an extensive catalog spanning over 14 releases.

The double retrospective compilation White Elephant, co-released by Hive Mind and QTV, gathers Negro Leo's defining tracks recorded since 2012. The sonic architecture merges Black Brazilian traditions—including Gilberto Gil's tropicalism, Itamar Assumpção's vanguard paulista, carnival Boi rhythms, funk carioca, and street samba—with no wave, punk-funk, free jazz, noise, and hyperpop. His avant-garde compositions document the shifting social fabric of modern Brazil in the digital age, transforming sonic overload into an intricate tool for artistic and political provocation.
