This is another installment in the famous compilation series by the Milanese independent label Record Kicks, dedicated to the contemporary wave of the funk and soul revival. By 2008, interest in the new deep funk and soul scene had expanded far beyond a tight-knit circle of record collectors. The massive success of Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Nicole Willis, and others turned this direction into a major phenomenon. Against this backdrop, Record Kicks continued to bring together the most exciting artists of the new funk/soul scene under one roof. The fifth volume features a wealth of material that, at the time of release, was relatively new or appearing on CD for the very first time. The label itself specifically highlighted that nearly all the tracks on the compilation made their CD debut in this exact format.Overall, this is a defining document of the era that witnessed a resurgence of interest in funk and soul. It lacks the feel of a standard commercial compilation: Record Kicks gathered material from various corners of the modern scene, seamlessly blending deep funk, soul, Northern Soul, boogaloo, afrobeat, and funk-jazz. This fifth edition showcases a contemporary scene that, in the late 2000s, was rediscovering the aesthetics of the 1960s and 1970s for a whole new audience.
