Christina Kubisch - Zenger Station (2023)

Another of iconic German sound artist Christina Kubisch's 'Electrical Walks'-related sets, 'Zenger Station' is made up of three collages made from electromagnetic recordings in Prague and one long piece made from material captured in Rome, Bangkok and Bratislava.

Kubisch's 'Electrical Walks' gear is important because it's so singular, recorded on specially-designed headphones that can pick up the electromagnetic signals that surround all of us as we wander around busy cities. And her compositions just make those occurrences more vivid: on the 'Zenger Station' suite, she walks around Prague's underground substation and captures interlocking rhythms and drones you'd swear had been generated by a modular system. On the flip, we're taken on a side-long journey across some of the world's busies capitals, but instead of hearing tourists and traffic, we hear the electromagnetic emissions of a bus in Rome, a tram in Bangkok and a trolley car in Bratislava - the exact sounds Kubisch hears as she traverses the world with her headphones.
