Composer and singer-songwriter Randy Newman, scion of the celebrated Hollywood composing dynasty of Alfred Newman, Emil Newman, and Lionel Newman, composed the score for the big-budget film adaptation of E.L. Doctorow's novel "Ragtime," produced by Dino DeLaurentiis. Building upon his deep knowledge of early 20th-century American popular music, Randy Newman infused the soundtrack with elements of Tin Pan Alley, cakewalk rhythms, and Scott Joplin-inspired ragtime traditions.

The score reflects the narrative's shifting social strata and emotional range—transitioning between comedy, melodrama, and tragedy—culminating in the intricate three-part piece "Dénouement." The soundtrack features instrumental cues alongside period vocal numbers performed by Donald O'Connor, the formal parlor song "One More Hour" sung by Jennifer Warnes, Randy Newman's own solo track "Change Your Way," and his original theme demo. For his work on the score and the song "One More Hour," Randy Newman received Academy Award nominations.
