Instant - Instant (1981)

Formed in Toulon in 1976 by composers Jean Cortes and Bernard Kalef, the French group INSTANT crafted music rooted in the philosophical concept of Yin and Yang. Their sound combined hypnotic female vocal harmonies, choral experimentation, and a spiritual intensity aligned with Zeuhl, Progressive Rock, and Jazz-Fusion, drawing parallels to Magma, Eskaton, Rialzu, and King Crimson.

Recorded in 1978 with sound engineer Jean Roché and pressed by Pathé Marconi in 1981, the debut album was shelved following the sudden disappearance of the project's patron. Left abandoned in an attic, virtually the entire physical run was destroyed years later, leaving only about a dozen surviving copies. More than four decades later, this rare artifact of the Toulon underground scene finally emerges from obscurity, with the digital release pairing the historical recording alongside 2022 re-recordings by the original musicians.
