Lucien Joly - Selected Works (2026) [Hi-Res]

French-Caribbean saxophonist, composer, and producer Lucien Joly spent three decades crafting a unique musical output, independently recording and releasing seven albums. His body of work gained renewed attention through DJ and producer Mambo Chick, who initially sought to reissue only his rare 1986 and 1987 vinyl records. Upon discovering five additional self-produced albums in his catalog, Mambo Chick curated a dedicated "selected works" compilation featuring one pivotal track from each of the saxophonist's seven releases.

The musical approach of Lucien Joly relies on a seamless fusion of Caribbean and Latin American rhythmic traditions (biguine, mazurka, zouk, calypso, bossa nova, salsa) with modal jazz, jazz fusion, and American funk. As a bandleader, Lucien Joly encourages collaborative harmonization and leaves ample space for jazz improvisation. Tracks such as Laura Laura, Mim, and Herbie highlight his ability to balance harmonic sophistication with accessible melodic structures, cementing his position in the history of Caribbean jazz.
