Shaman (2019) is a ritualistic and hypnotic canvas by the Swedish underground avant-garde quartet Ex Canix, preceding their album Soma (2023). As the title suggests, the album's concept revolves around shamanism, archaic sound trances, and immersion into altered states of consciousness through the cyclical repetition of rhythmic figures. The album captures the Swedish musicians' live, unfiltered analog improvisations, blending the spirit of 1970s German Kosmische Musik with primal ethno-percussion and the freeform nature of Scandinavian free jazz.
