Across three decades of collaboration, tenor saxophonist Ivo Perelman and pianist Matthew Shipp have developed one of the most sustained and distinctive musical relationships in contemporary improvised music, beginning with recordings made in 1996 and unfolding through an extraordinary succession of duo encounters and ensembles with William Parker, Mat Maneri, Michael Bisio, Whit Dickey, Gerald Cleaver, Bobby Kapp, Andrew Cyrille and others. What began as an encounter between two forceful improvising personalities has evolved into something closer to a shared language: each musician retains an immediately identifiable voice, yet their responses can be so instantaneous that distinctions between initiative, accompaniment and counterstatement seem to disappear. Their extensive work in larger configurations has continually fed that relationship, but the saxophone-piano duo remains its most exposed form, leaving nothing between impulse and response. Projects including "The Art of the Duet", "Callas", the seven-volume "Art of Perelman-Shipp", "Oneness", "Efflorescence", "Fruition" and "Magical Incantation" have documented that evolution from different perspectives, repeatedly demonstrating how freely improvised music can acquire coherence not through predetermined structure but through accumulated trust, memory and intense listening.

Recorded in two sessions at Brooklyn's Park West Studios by Jim Clouse, "Duologue 7: Distillation" returns Perelman and Shipp to that elemental setting. The title is particularly apt for musicians whose long association has progressively stripped away the need for explanation: melodic fragments, harmonic implications, abrupt changes of register, silence, density and rhythmic momentum become parts of a conversation whose logic is created in real time. Rather than revisiting their history, the music draws upon everything that history has made possible — two independent improvisers able to challenge, anticipate, contradict and support one another with the intimacy of musicians who have spent decades discovering just how much can be communicated without a score.
