Dave Bass - Trio Nuevo, Vol. 3 (2026) [Hi-Res]

The third album by the jazz trio featuring pianist Dave Bass, bassist Tyler Miles, and drummer Steve Helfand, titled “Trio Nuevo Vol 3”, showcases a deep level of ensemble cohesion developed through years of performing together. The musicians draw from a wide stylistic spectrum, seamlessly blending hard bop, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms, classical music, pop ballads, and gospel. Moving away from conventional drum set techniques, Steve Helfand favors toms and a snare with the snares disengaged, giving the rhythm section an organic, hand-percussion quality.

The album's repertoire stands out for its kaleidoscopic variety while maintaining artistic balance. Key tracks include the opener “Neither Have I Wings,” driven by Brazilian baião grooves, an interpretation of Thelonious Monk’s lesser-known composition “Work,” an atonal free jazz jam titled “Far and Wee,” and “Lost Mambo,” which uses Juan Tizol’s “Perdido” as a launchpad. The classical canon is reinterpreted through blues-inflected takes on Johann Sebastian Bach’s Toccata in E minor and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake.” The ballad selections feature jazz arrangements of Otis Redding’s soul classic “Try a Little Tenderness” and the Disney theme “When You Wish Upon a Star,” alongside a seamless fusion of Chick Corea’s work with an original gospel piece.
