Vocalist, composer, and bandleader Vanisha Gould returns to the Cellar Music label with a new album, "What An Interesting Girl," made up entirely of her original songs. Her music is built on a blend of vulnerability and strength, and her voice is marked by clarity, precise diction, and a mix of humor, wisdom, and pathos.

The songs cover a wide range: from a scene in which the narrator locks eyes with a stranger across a crowded room and stubbornly refuses to make the first move, to songs about longing, fantasy, and freedom. Some made Gould laugh as she wrote them, while others unexpectedly voiced something she hadn't realized she was trying to say.

Most of the compositions took shape on bandstands long before the studio recording. With pianist Chris McCarthy, bassist Charlie Lincoln, and drummer Samuel Bolduc, Gould performed them live hundreds of times, and the songs changed shape, gathering stories and meaning along the way. By the time they were recorded, they felt less like pieces written by one author and more like old friends it was time to introduce to one another.
