GLOTZE IIC is an album by the Leipzig-based band GLOTZE, recorded in an expanded lineup: the ensemble, which has long worked with the Malaysian violinist and pianist Pei Ann Yeoh, is joined by cellist Elisabeth Coudoux, who treats the cello less as an instrument than as a material to be explored. The resulting six-voice collective is not a sextet in the classical sense, but a field of tension between six distinct musical temperaments.

The music deliberately brings together what is usually kept apart: European modernism and free jazz, conceptual composition and collective improvisation, chamber-music precision and the physicality of punk. Structures are built only to be put under pressure at once; sonic masses harden into archaic blocks and instantly splinter. There is no stability, and everything is held together by tension.

The band’s core stance is not to reconcile opposites or seek synthesis, but to thrive on friction and resistance, letting different positions coexist in the same space. The musicians expose the fault lines of their own musical traditions, and a new form of coherence gradually grows out of this. For all its complexity, the music is not demonstrative: behind the noise lies construction, behind the construction the possibility of collapse, and behind the collapse a clear understanding of the goal — to turn sound into an event. For GLOTZE, composition is not a blueprint and improvisation is not freedom; both are tools for undermining certainty. The result fits neither jazz, nor contemporary classical music, nor any recognizable scene: it is the sound of six people willing to confront both the material and each other.
