This medical business suspense drama centers on an MR (Medical Representative)—a pharmaceutical sales professional who visits doctors and pharmacists to provide and gather information on prescription drugs and promote their proper use. The story explores the behind-the-scenes world of the pharmaceutical industry and medical care, portraying the conflicts faced by those involved in work that deals with human lives. It is based on the novel by Yo Kusakabe, a renowned medical mystery author.
Japan's pharmaceutical industry boasts a market size of approximately 10 trillion yen. Bringing a single new drug to market takes 10 to 15 years and hundreds of billions of yen in R&D costs, yet the probability of success is roughly one in 25,000. In an industry where numerous organizations and stakeholders are involved with a single drug, the drama powerfully depicts the struggles of MRs—who work in a field dealing with life—as they navigate the tension between sales competition and medical ethics. Osamu Mukai plays Masaki Kioucha, an MR at "Tenpo Pharmaceutical" who strives to uphold the belief of "patient-first" care while torn between the conflicting interests of patients, doctors, and his company. Jun Kaname plays Atsushi Samejima, an MR driven by a ruthless profit-first mentality; Yoshinori Masakado plays Kazumi Ichihashi, a rookie MR at Tenpo Pharmaceutical; and Kosuke Toyohara plays Kazuhiko Isogawa, an executive officer and the head of sales at the company. A talented cast of distinctive actors rounds out the ensemble. The music is provided by jizue, an instrumental band based in Kyoto. From somber melodies to high-energy tracks, the music adds a sense of immediacy to a story that sharply cuts to the heart of the realities within the pharmaceutical industry and medical settings.
