UMO Jazz Orchestra, Magnum Coltrane Price, Nils Landgren, Viktoria Tolstoy - Supermusic (UMO Jazz Orchestra Meets Magnum Coltrane Price) (2012)

Supermusic is an album by the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, a big band founded in 1975. The orchestra has won the Finnish Yrjö and Emma awards, received a Grammy nomination, and recorded more than 60 albums. Here it plays the music of Magnum Coltrane Price (spelled Magnum Coltrane Prince in the album title) together with the Swedish trombonist Nils Landgren and the vocalist Viktoria Tolstoy. Nine of the thirteen tracks are by this composer: Nekoti Rock, Stuck in a Dream, Hangover Sex, Believe, Mag Runs the Voodoo Down, My Way 2 Say, Remember to Forget. The rest show the tradition this material grows out of: Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow (the theme from the TV series Baretta, by Dave Grusin and Morgan Ames), Giving Up by Van McCoy, the funk standard Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky by Allen Toussaint, Just Kissed My Baby by Ziggy Modeliste, Leo Nocentelli and George Porter Jr. (founders of The Meters), Brown Sugar by Michael Archer and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and D.M.S.R. (Dance, Music, Sex, Romance) by Prince.

Most arrangements are by Pessi Levanto. Three numbers, Stuck in a Dream, Believe and My Way 2 Say, were arranged by the Swedish saxophonist Magnus Lindgren. The orchestra is built on solos from its own musicians. Tenor saxophonists Olli Ojajärvi and Teemu Salminen, baritone saxophonist Pertti Päivinen and alto saxophonist Jouni Järvelä each solo in their own number. Guitarist Erik Söderlund plays in three tracks, including the nearly eight-minute D.M.S.R., and keyboardist Seppo Kantonen plays Fender Rhodes and grand piano. Trumpeters Tero Saarti and Mikko Pettinen solo in a couple of numbers. Landgren takes trombone solos in four tracks: Nekoti Rock, Just Kissed My Baby, D.M.S.R. and the closing Remember to Forget. The total running time is about 70 minutes, with the longest track at 7:57 and the shortest at 3:07. The repertoire runs from jazz and soul grooves to funk and pop classics.
