Vroni Frisch - Ephemer | Jazz Thing Next Generation Vol. 115 (2026) [Hi-Res]

The album Ephemer takes its name from a Greek word meaning “short-lived” or “fleeting”, and the title reflects the essence of the music of bassist, composer and bandleader Vroni Frisch. Her quartet, the VRONI FRISCH BAND — Frisch on six-string electric bass, Gregor Schor on reeds, Manuel Seng on piano and Rhodes, and Tobias Frohnhofer on drums — builds its sound on the tension between carefully shaped compositions and moments that can never be repeated. The musicians move freely between contemporary jazz, lyrical chamber-like episodes, cinematic colours and powerful grooves. Frisch writes with contrast in mind: a piece can be smooth and delicate one moment, rough and untamed the next. The foundation is expressive melodies, rich harmonies and intricate rhythms, while improvisation lets each piece take an unexpected turn. Nine original compositions, among them “Why,” “Stream,” “Lugano,” “Drab” and the expansive “Megalodon,” show an ensemble equally assured in subtle interplay and grand gestures. The music feels composed yet never fixed — it keeps shifting, developing and responding to the moment. For Frisch, who works across jazz, improvised music, art-pop and large ensemble composition, this quartet has become a focused space where these different strands of musical experience come together.
