Australian guitarist and composer Oren Ambarchi, one of the most restlessly inventive figures in experimental music over the last three decades, founder of Black Truffle Records and a frequent collaborator of Keiji Haino, Jim O’Rourke, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin, releases Prophetic Perfect Tense on Kou Records. It is his most stripped-back work: solo guitar, two sides, two takes and minimal effects. His earlier studio records were typically conceptual, layered affairs with guest collaborators, but here he deliberately abandons that model. By his own account, it is the most conventionally guitar-sounding of his solo albums and the closest he has come in a studio to the live energy of his trio Ghosted.

The album was recorded at Studio Dede in Tokyo in January 2026, produced by Randall Dunn. The intent was stubborn restraint, somewhere between João Gilberto’s hushed 1973 self-titled album and Alemu Aga’s “Bägänna” sessions. But once the guitar ran through a Leslie cabinet, a Fender Twin and an Ampeg B-15 onto a Telefunken 24-track, a loose, abstracted shuffle emerged, warm and three-dimensional, with amp hum, fret squeaks and room noise deliberately left intact. Each side was captured in a single take, and the one guitar overdub was added at Dunn’s insistence. The result sounds like a room, not a studio.

Dunn recorded, mixed and produced the album; Ben Greenberg mastered it and made the Dolby Atmos mixes, and Paul Gold cut the lacquer at Salt Mastering. The front cover is “Untitled, 1977” by Kazuko Miyamoto, photo courtesy of the artist’s estate and Zürcher Gallery; the back cover portrait is by Ken Langraf.
