Surfer Dave - Thinking Will Get You Nowhere (2026) [Hi-Res]

The belief that every problem can be solved by thinking breaks down when it comes to grief, uncertainty and loss: they cannot be fixed by contemplation. Thinking doesn’t help with the most valuable things either — love, human connection, music, art — and actually undermines them by getting in the way of intuition. So this album is conceived as a grounding meditation: nine songs about the world as it is, and about how to relate to it without the mind. The softness and tactile, human texture of the sound (intimate piano, delicate percussion, carefully built atmospheres) is meant to give the mind a brief rest and let go of rumination.

The same idea runs through the cover: colorful squares, cut by hand, jagged and not quite symmetrical. They stand for the human attempt to set things in order or control something, and their beauty lies in their imperfection and the accidents around them, not in control. There are nine, one for each track, and they are made of felt, the material that gives the record’s acoustic piano its warm, subdued tone. Behind them is open sky, a backdrop of the optimism and hope embedded in the record and its title.
