Portuguese saxophonist, composer and multi-instrumentalist João Cabrita (Cabrita) releases his third solo album, “partytime”, on Omnichord Records. It completes a trilogy about time. The debut “Cabrita” (2020) looked back at three decades of collaborations with Sérgio Godinho, Dead Combo, The Legendary Tigerman, Cais Sodré Funk Connection, Virgem Suta, Susana Félix, X-Wife, Selma Uamusse and Márcia. “Umbra” (2023) was devoted to the present, to loss and to the sense of reaching middle age. “partytime” looks to the future and sets shared joy and friendship against loneliness and individualism. Its sound rests on 1970s funk, soul and disco, where groove and dance come first.

The idea took shape in 2024, when Cabrita was asked to assemble a Portuguese horn section for the American group The Temptations at their concert at the Casino Estoril. Contact with the legacy of that legendary soul act steered him toward the new sound. For the recording he gathered longtime friends and colleagues: drummers Ivo Costa and Rui Alves, percussionist Iuri Oliveira, bassists Francisco Rebelo and Renato Chantre de Almeida, keyboardist João Gomes, and vocalists and guitarists David Pessoa and Milton Gulli. Cabrita himself served as musical director and shared production with Guilherme Gonçalves, who handled sound, mixing and mastering. Recording took place in 2025 at NTP Studio, with some drum and bass sessions at Barulho Estúdio and Nascer do Som Studio.

The album is built as the story of a single party night, from excitement and freedom to excess and its consequences. The first single, “Good Morning”, begins the tale at the morning after, at the end of the party. The second, “Party Life”, was recorded with David Pessoa and actress Teresa Mello Sampayo (spoken word, the figure of Circe). It follows a character who repeatedly promises to give up the nightlife and keeps going back to it. The new single, “Take me out”, conveys the anticipation of a meeting and an invitation to go out and dance, the lightest and most celebratory piece in the cycle. It features Ivo Costa, Iuri Oliveira, Renato Chantre and João Gomes (keyboards), while Cabrita plays keyboards, guitar and saxophones. Vocals are shared by Milton Gulli, David Pessoa, Cabrita, Tamin, Guiomar and Clara. The video was directed by Richard F. Coelho, who made all the album’s videos, a series of four clips with a shared storyline.

Before the album, the EP “Afterlife” came out in 2026. The album will be presented live in November: on 3 November at Coliseu Club in Lisbon, then at the Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente at the Coimbra em Blues festival. Through groove, dance and celebration, the album asserts that music takes on meaning when it is shared.
