American composer Gerald Fried (1928–2023) wrote the score for Robert Aldrich’s 1971 crime drama THE GRISSOM GANG. In the film, small-time thieves botch a jewelry robbery and impulsively kidnap Barbara Blandish, a millionaire’s sheltered daughter, only for the ruthless Grissom clan, ruled by the domineering Ma Grissom, to seize her and turn the kidnapping into a lucrative ransom scheme. Rather than the usual gangster-film drive, Fried, who had already worked with Aldrich on TOO LATE THE HERO and THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE, created a sparse, uneasy score with haunting melodies and unsettled harmonies that mirror the characters’ emotional instability. The soundtrack was released by Dragon’s Domain Records.Title: The Grissom Gang (Original Score)

Fried’s path began at New York’s High School of Music & Art and Juilliard, where he studied oboe (graduating in 1945). His friend Stanley Kubrick asked him to score the boxing short DAY OF THE FIGHT; with no film-music schools available, Fried spent months going to the movies to learn the craft. RKO Pathé bought the film, and he went on to score four more Kubrick pictures, including THE KILLING and PATHS TO GLORY. After moving to Los Angeles in 1956, he worked on horror and crime films (THE VAMPIRE, THE RETURN OF DRACULA, MACHINE GUN KELLY, I BURY THE LIVING, TIMBUKTU) and in the 1960s became a leading television composer: GILLIGAN’S ISLAND, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, STAR TREK. His major achievement of the 1970s was the score for the miniseries ROOTS (1977), which he took over from Quincy Jones; both won Emmys. In the 1980s he kept working in television, documentaries and the occasional feature film. He died on February 17, 2023, at age 95, and remains a key figure in the evolution of film and television music.
