With Heimweh, soprano Magali Simard-Galdès, horn player Simon Poirier, and pianist Olivier Godin invite listeners to immerse themselves in the world of 19th-century Romantic lieder. Centred on Franz Schubert, a key figure in the genre, the album also brings to light the works of Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda, Charles Oberthür, Vinzenz Lachner, and Ferdinand Sieber composers who are less well-known today but whose compositions reflect the influence of Schubert’s aesthetic.
‘’Heimweh’’ can be translated as “nostalgia” or “homesickness” and is illustrated here by Schubert taking centre stage with four lieder. Soprano Magali Simard-Galdès is accompanied by Simon Poirier, a specialist in historical horns and by Olivier Godin, a renowned concert and chamber musician and artistic director of the Salle Bourgie. The performance places great emphasis on period instruments: Simon Poirier plays several types of period horns, while Olivier Godin performs the program on an 1827 John Broadwood & Sons pianoforte from the Festival Classica collection.
