Timeless—yet always fresh: Regardless of the whims of the pop music industry, Planet Yello has been orbiting for nearly fifty years, whisking us away to a world where the past and future greet one another, and where James Bond might join forces with the Man in the Moon, Dionysus, and Philip K. Dick.
"To the future, through the past"—with their fifteenth studio album, *Time Lab*, Dieter Meier and Boris Blank put this maxim into sonic practice more than ever. Through meticulous, passionate craftsmanship, Blank assembles his imaginary soundtracks from fresh samples and artifacts unearthed from his own archive—a vast collection of sound fragments, riffs, and motifs amassed over nearly five decades of creative work. Meier dives into these parallel sonic realms, discovering within them his romantic tales of outlaws, mysterious nocturnal figures, and Dadaist wordplay. In essence, every Yello track is both ancient and brand new. This principle is perfectly illustrated by the first single, "Around the Sun." It is based on a previously unreleased recording by Meier—a track that was dropped at the last minute from the selection for *Claro Que Si* (1981). Blank draped a fresh sonic garment around Meier’s resonant voice, resulting in a combination that is both elegant and fluid—quintessentially Yello—blending past and present, a romantic sense of wanderlust, and driving percussion. "Break Out" also plays with stylistic elements that can be traced back to Yello’s earliest days: a prowling, dangerous bass riff, fiery percussion, and Meier—the master storyteller—in hypnotic, top form. Time begins where it ends, or vice versa. Or, as Boris Blank puts it: “Yello’s music doesn’t really know time.”
