“Excavations” is the debut collaborative album by Swedish pianist Alex Zethson, French violinist Clara Lévy, and French tubist Fanny Méthot. Released jointly by the labels Thanatosis and Thödol, the project captures the trio’s first improvisational meeting. The musicians turn their instruments into raw material, creating complex sonic landscapes through real-time composition and intuitive interaction. Zethson provides structure with cues that guide the group in exploring percussion, resonance, and breath. Throughout the recording, the trio treats wood, strings, brass, metal, and air as equal participants. The compositions range from irregular rhythmic pieces to expansive, drone-like soundscapes created with electronic bows. Anton Turell takes part in the live mixing of pieces such as “Materialism,” adding a mechanical, otherworldly dimension to the performance. Ultimately, “Excavations” is a recording of layered listening that reveals the hidden potential of familiar musical instruments.
