Blues guitar master Robben Ford plays Ricky Peterson's sparring partner on the slow drippin' "Do That Again," typical of the simmering blues energy of the longtime Sanborn keyboardist's Windham Hill Jazz debut, Souvenir. The two trade off melody and harmony lines on electric guitar and Hammond B-3 (one of Peterson's specialties) for some of the tune, then join forces to create a powerful electric sizzle duality. Peterson goes through numerous mood and genre swings throughout, showing a careful balance between the carefully measured pop ballad and the all for fun, free for all hang that sounds like it could have come from an impromptu living room performance. "Drop Shot" is just this kind of restless bonfire of a tune, jumpy, driven by thick basslines and punctuated by the scorching brass accents of the aptly dubbed section "The Hornheads." Peterson plays his B-3 so quickly, you'd swear he had ants in his pants as he eggs on his horn section to keep up with the key changes. But then it's as though he realizes he's an adult and takes the time to slow down and reflect on life on the dark and moody "May." Somewhere in the middle between these extremes is the spirited but not overly busy "Placid Paul," a Latin pop piece given more gusto by rumbling percussion lines than Peterson's mildly spicy electric piano solo. ~ by Jonathan Widran allmusic.com
