Jon Raskin's group of improvising musicians performs music on this CD that sounds very spontaneous even when in some cases it is thoroughly composed. It is often difficult to tell the difference, since the writing is as advanced as the soloing. While the electronics make some pieces sound quite eerie and random in their sounds, the more acoustic numbers, such as "African Tulip," are reminiscent of the original Ornette Coleman Quartet and Ornette's brand of free jazz. Trumpeter Liz Allbee is consistently impressive and works well with Raskin. The music, which is often jarring, ranges from the tedious to the stimulating, keeping one constantly guessing. Some will hear it as intriguing while others may consider it colorful noise. The performances are easier to admire than to love.
