Freshlyground - Can't Stop (2018)

When we started making music in 2002 it did not occur to us to pick one style of music and call that Freshlyground music - we just got into a room and jammed. We didn't decide to include members from various parts of the continent; we just met each other quite organically... and jammed. We did not have any kind of plan to reach certain milestones, we just wanted to make music together and if that music felt good to us then we wanted to share it with the world.
Nearly two decades later we are still making music we love, we are still jamming across genres and our make up is even more pan-African (still not by design) - and we generally still work without a plan!
Our past members have included Aron Turest-Swartz - the first guy to go to another and say “Lets make music”; Justin Tonkin, Damian Staz, Rayelle Goodman, Shaggy Scheepers and Kyla-Rose Smith. Today Freshlyground is Josh Hawks on bass guitar, Peter Cohen on drums, Christian Bakalanga on guitar, Julio Sigauque on guitar, Zolani Mahola on vocals and Simon Attwell on flute, keyboard and saxophone.
We released our first album Jika Jika in 2003 - this was an independent release and the first of many to come. We teamed up with Victor Masondo and JB Arthur to produce Nomvula and Ma Cheri which we released through Sony Music, staying with Sony we produced Radio Africa with New York producer Fabrice Dupont. We went independent again with the release of Take me to the Dance in 2012 after putting out our compilation album “The Hits”.
On April 6th we release our 6th studio album and 7th release “Can’t Stop”. We’ve collaborated with Swedish producer Tore Johansson on this record who is most notable for his work with Franz Ferdinand, the Cardigans and OK GO.
We love people and we love music - we are all about connection between each other, between nations and beyond the borders of age, religion, race and creed. Music matters and we do it all with love... no hate.
