Charles Aznavour has been one of the greats in show business for more than half a century. In the mid-40s he was discovered by Edith Piaf, who took him on their tours.
After several productions with the pianist Pierre Roche Charles Aznavour began his solo career, first wrote together with Gilbert Bécaud, who set his lyrics to music. His breakthrough came in 1956 with his premiere in the Paris Olympics. In the same year he had his first big hit with "Sur ma vie".
Throughout his extraordinary career, he has written over a thousand songs, most of which are about love. His expressive voice enchanted audiences not only in his native France. He also recorded many of his songs in Portuguese, Spanish, English, Italian and German.
In addition to his career as a singer, he was also very successful as an actor. Unforgettable are his roles in "Shoot the Pianist" and "Taxi to Tobruk".
In 2006, Charles Aznavour's farewell tour ended with a concert in Essen, but further concerts followed in Paris and Montréal, Canada. Charles Aznavour has been Armenian ambassador to Switzerland since June 2009, and he also represents his country in Geneva with the United Nations.
There is hardly a French artist to whom the term "world star" is more appropriate than Charles Aznavour.
