Musically this album takes the listener on a journey across diverse musical terrain, from jazz balladry to emotion drenched blues to sassy soul; it is an album that defies categorisation. We didn’t want to be a slave to genre; I wanted the songs to come first, and the stories behind them.
From tales of the psychedelic streets and grimy bedsits of London town in Pity City to the glittering pop of love lost and then regained in opening track ‘When I See You,’ the albums 10 tracks are as Ruby says, “…united by my love of language and traditional songwriting. Myself and co-writer Louise Maggs wanted to create what we hope are unique melodies and ambient soundscapes. Lyrically, they draw on my life; the good, the bad, the ugly, the poetic and the transformative. Ultimately I see it like this; creativity is a process of attempting to turn the dark coal of life into shimmering gold...I really hope the listener can take something positive from that, something vital and life affirming. Like anyone I have battled with demons and undoers, but creativity has helped unlock the door to freeing me from them; perhaps all can be resolved in the tower of song!...so let's smile, say No to the naysayers, drink a beer together and listen to some blues! Yeah...that would be cool :-) Enjoy!
